Abstract
In this study, the short-term results of rubber band ligation (RBL) and injection sclerotherapy (SCT) for second degree (2°) hemorrhoids are retrospectively evaluated and compared in a non-selected Turkish patient group. Thirty-four adult patients with 2° hemorrhoids are reported. A standard high-fibre diet, the daily amount of non-starch polysaccharides exceeding 2°-25 g, was started one week before the initial interventions and continued for two months. RBL was applied to 18 patients and SCT to 16. Both symptomatic status and objective healing criteria were evaluated. During a follow-up period exceeding 6 months (6-10 months), the success rate of RBL + high-fibre diet was 88.9% (16/18), while it was 68.8% (11/16) in the SCT group. Both methods were free from notable complications. The short-term results of this study indicate that the fixation methods of RBL or SCT performed on an outpatient basis are encouragingly effective in the treatment of 2° hemorrhoids
