Abstract
Background/aims: Effect of vitamin E on hepatic lipid peroxidation in rats fad with fish oil was evaluated in this study. Methods: Thirty two sprague-Dawley species rats, aged six weeks and with a weight range of 250±30g were divided into four groups, one of which was a control group. All groups, one of which was a control group. All groups were fed a diet including 10% fish oil and the three study groups were given vitamin E doses of 3.45 and 209 IU/kg. Liver tissue was taken ten weeks later and the degree of lipid peroxidation determined by thiobarbituric acid method. Results: Mean malondialdehide values 156.00 nmol/g tissue in the control group, and for groups I, II an III it was 135.63, 79.12 and 81.50 nmol/g tissue respectively. The difference between groups was determined by varians analysis (p<0.001) Conclusions: Hepatic lipid peroxidation increases in rats fed a diet containing fish oil and vitamin E has a significant mediating effect on this increase. Maximum protection was seen in the groups fed wit h 45 or 209 IU/kg of vitamin E. This study concludes that the lower dose is the most appropriate in terms of overall cost and effectiveness.
