Abstract
In this study, the value of imprint cytology in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection was investigated Two antral biopsies were taken from each of 93 patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. One of two biopsy samples was used for preparing the imprint smear, which was used only for the detection of H. pylori. All the biopsy specimens were used for both detection of H. pylori and tissue diagnosis. The results of imprint cytology were compared with the results of histology, recognised as a reliable method for diagnosing H.pylori. The sensitivity and specificity of imprint cytology was noted to be 93.75%, and 92.3% respectively was also noted that preparation of imprint smears did not damage the biopsy specimens for subsequent histologic examinations. It is concluded that. Imprint cytology is a cost-effective method in addition to histology for detecting H. pylori in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsy. It does not require any additional biopsy.
