Abstract
Detecting the companies that misrepresent their earnings by manipulations of financial information isof great importance for the economic actors. Beneish Model and its derivatives are prominent amongthe tools used to detect earnings manipulation in academic research. In this study, detection performancesof the M scores calculated by the original Beneish Model, the revised version, and the modifiedversion for Turkey are tested specifically on the companies operating in Turkey. For this purpose,a test sample of 300 company-years with a close ratio of one-tenth of manipulators is formed by thefinancial statements for the period 2011-2019 of companies listed on Istanbul Stock Exchange. In theanalysis, a statistically significant difference is observed between the M scores of the manipulator andthe control companies for the original Beneish Model and the revised version of the model. For thesetwo models, the abilities to detect the manipulations performed in Turkey are very close to the levelof which is reported in the study that first introduced the model. On the other hand, it is observed thatthe model modified for Turkey causes a much higher estimation error when compared to the othertwo models. This study concludes with propositions of M score cut-offs to classify the companies asmanipulators in Turkey. Cut-off values of M scores proposed for the original and the revised BeneishModel is -1,90 and for the model modified for Turkey is -1,35.
