Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of metal and ceramic self-ligating bracket systems and conventional bracket systems ligated with stainless steel wire and elastic ligatures on the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans. Material and Method In our study, 40 metal conventional, 40 ceramic conventional, 20 metal self-ligating and 20 ceramic self-ligating premolar brackets were used. Twenty of metal and ceramic brackets were tied with stainless steel wire ligature and the other 20 are connected with elastic ligature. Adhesion of S. mutans was assessed by a microbiological culture technique. Results There are statistically significant differences between bracket groups in terms of bacterial counts of S. mutans (p<0.001). The highest bacterial count of S. mutans was measured in the ceramic bracket tied with elastic ligature group, the lowest bacterial count of S. mutans was measured in the metal bracket tied with stainless steel ligature and metal self-ligating bracket groups. Conclusion The use of bracket designs with less plaque retention area or the preference of stainless steel wire ligatures instead of the elastic ligatures that lead to increased plaque accumulation will contribute to preservation of oral hygiene by reducing microbial colonization.
