Abstract
Investigation of the magnetic properties, particularly of the direction of magnetization, of rocks of the Svionian leptite trend in Middle Sweden (Bergslagen). The design and technique of the used PUZICHA-apparatus is described. It is shown that the accuracy obtained can be considered entirely sufficient. The examination of rock specimens from the Svionian leptite trend in Middle Sweden as to their direction of magnetization showed that the direction of magnetization deviated by about 30° from the present earth's magnetic field. Due to the ratio of residual to induced magnetism it can be presumed that during Svionian time no other but the direction of magnetization as determined above must have existed. This confirms the results of observation published by S. K. Runcorn about the deviation of the direction of magnetization of rocks of different epochs from the earth's magnetic field. -The magnitute of magnetization depends on the percentage of magnetite which was recognized as the carrying agent of magnetization. It was possible to work out two characteristic groups, one having about 1 per cent and the other 10 per cent of magnetite. The great inhomogenity of the rock did not often allow a distinct evaluation of the results of measurements.
