Abstract

This study focuses on individuals whose numbers are decreasing and who have consciously preferred to stay away from social media. The aim of the study is to evaluate social media from a different perspective from the eyes of non-social media users and try to understand the current situation of life without social media. The effects of the use of social media in the center of human life on individuals and society are the subject of many scientific studies, mostly through users. Since this study is carried out on those who prefer to be excluded, it differs from other studies that make up the majority. The study was carried out by applying in-depth interview, which is one of the data collection techniques of the qualitative research method. Although the participants were educated and had the opportunity to use social media in terms of socio-economic terms, the participants were those who never used or used it before, but then abandoned it completely. As a result of the interviews with a total of 9 participants, the data obtained regarding their perceptions of social media, their observations about social media users, the place where they position themselves and the reasons for staying away to the extent of their behavior were coded and divided into themes and grouped. Accordingly, the 4 main reasons that push the participants to stay away from social media are stated as addiction, threatening privacy and security, artificializing relationships and risk of turning them into consumption objects. In general, it has been observed that the escape from social media depends on ideological or other personal reasons. In addition, as a result of the interviews, it was determined that the participants were at peace with digital technology and positioned themselves in a privileged place compared to social media users. On the other hand, it was found that they did not focus entirely on negative features of social media but they also admitted that it has positive features and they confess that social media is attractive, however, the participants preferred to stay away from social media. Finally, a meaningful link could not be established between whether the participants are social in real life and whether they use social media.
