Abstract

Focusing on the relationship between football, celebrity and consumption culture in Turkey during the 1950s, this paper analyzes two article series about the national football stars which were published in 22 successive issues of Hayat magazine. It was for the first time that the private life of football stars was observed as a matter of subject in a mass popular magazine. This development addresses a change in the perception of a footballer particularly as a result of the professionalization of football in 1951. While becoming celebrities brought the footballers power and prestige, it was at the same time resulted in an ideological use of footballer s image through media representation. An analysis of footballers representation in Hayat magazine reveals the notion of celebrity as a cultural formation with a social function. The changing consumption culture in Turkey under American influence played a crucial role in the representation of football celebrities in the magazine. Idealization of the footballer as an active consumer with a Western life-style and taste addresses the ideological function of the celebrity .
