Abstract

Urban transformation and gentrification provide considerable opportunities in the service of the neoliberal transformation process in which space and identity are reorganized for capital accumulation and production of power. The transformation of the city aims for capital accumulation through increasing financialization, globalization, rent and dispossession while it targets the urban opposition and the poor with the new urban identity that it puts forward. This process, which has recently been experienced in Turkey as well, affected diverse segments of society quite negatively. Based on an ethnographic study and the examination of the history of the transphobic practices increasing in parallel with the proliferation of transformation and gentrification projects in İstanbul during the last twenty years, in this study I will explore the relations between neoliberalism and conservatism, capital accumulation and the discourse of public morality, and the state and society; and I will discuss the ways these relations affect the lives of transgender individuals. In so doing, the first case I will analyze is the recent expulsion and dispossession of transgender groups in Küçük Bayram Street in Beyoglu, conduct- ed by the state organs. The second case to be analyzed is the transphobic propaganda and lynching attempts in Avcılar s Meis Site which took place concurrently with the incidents in Beyoğlu. With reference to Robert Castel s concept of disaffiliation, which argues that the increasing rupture in the social bonds of those disaffiliated is due to the rise of insecurity and uncertainty in the labor market, the article aims to analyze and discuss how transgender women are deterritorialized and how transphobia is commoditized in these two incidents and through urban transformation in general.
