Özet
İngiliz sömürge döneminde özellikle idari kamu binalarının tasarımı ve inşası sömürge yönetiminin değişik tarihsel aşamalarında Kıbrıs'ta uygulamaya koyduğu mimari felsefesindeki dönüşüm ve sürekliliklerin önemli bir göstergesi olmuştur. Bu makale, Kıbrıs mimari tarihinin önemli dönüşüm süreçlerinden birini oluşturan İngiliz sömürge dönemini birbirini takip eden üç tarihsel dönemde ve bu dönemlerde inşa edilmiş üç eserden hareketle incelemektedir. Bu çerçevede Kıbrıs'ta İngiliz sömürge dönemi mimarisindeki süreklilik ve dönüşümler; İngiliz Koloni Dilini oluşturmada mimarinin yerine, İngiliz Sömürge Mimarisinin genel özelliklerine, tarihsel gelişimine, Kıbrıs'ta İngiliz sömürge dilinin mekâna yansıma biçimlerine atıfta bulunularak irdelenmektedir. Bu tarihsel ve kuramsal arkaplan bağlamında makale, 1878-1960 yılları arasında İngiliz sömürge (koloni) yönetiminin üç farklı döneminde inşa edilen kamusal binaların mimari formlarının, tasarımlarının ve uygulamalarının karşılaştırmalı analizi üzerinden İngiliz sömürge yönetiminin mimari politikalarındaki değişim ve süreklilikleri tartışmaktadır
Abstract
The design and construction of administrative public buildings have been important indicators of the transformations and continuity in the British colonialist architectural philosophy that has been put into practice in Cyprus at different historical stages of the British colonial administration. This article assesses the British colonial period as an era of a major transformation in the architectural history of Cyprus. The authors examine changes and continuities in the British architectural policies regarding the official buildings of the colony through the analyses of three official buildings which were built in three consecutive historical periods under British colonial administration. Within this context, it refers to the role of architecture in constructing the British Colonial language, the general characteristics and historical development of British colonial architecture, and reflection of the colonial language to the architectural forms and spatial policies. Reflecting on historical and theoretical debates on the British architecture in its colonies, the article discusses transformation and continuity in the British architectural policies in Cyprus through a comparative analysis of architectural forms, designs, and applications of official buildings which were erected in three different historical periods between 1871 and 1960
