Abstract

The island of Cyprus has hosted many civilisations in its thousands of years of geography, and has historically been home to many cultural and architectural heritage sites until today. Especially the capital city Nicosia, has been one of the most important cities during the historical process, due to its architecture and architectural texture, which is influenced by various historical periods which it holds. The historical heritage building types that make up the architecture such as cathedral, mosque, church, palace, municipal market, khan, mansion and residence on the wall of Nicosia have many different values such as sociological, cultural, economical and political and they are influential in all these aspects. Throughout the history, the construction and usage of khan has started gaining importance due to the fact that the passage of the most important trade routes of the Eastern Mediterranean go through the island of Cyprus, and the native business people ( traders) who stopped there for a break, created the need of accommodation. The Great Khan, which is the most spectacular and popular architectural buildings in the island, is one of the most important historical monuments that we have inherited from the Ottoman era. The Great Khan, like all historical buildings, has been abolished to pay for the destruction of humanity, time and nature. After many years of restoration to get rid of structural damage, the khan has been brought to its present condition and various functions have been added to give the building a renewed and rejuvenated life. There have been radical alterations in functions such as holding concerts and exhibitions on the inner courtyard and ground floor rooms where animals used to be kept and replacing places where people used the stay at night with art studios. The transformation of the building, both physically and functionally, has made the Great Khan to become more than just an ordinary historic building with a high cultural value and turned it to a symbol of the city and at the same time an important figure which feeds the society culturally and socially, and brings a new life. The socio-cultural sustainable effects on the building and society that are the result of implementation and application in the re-use adaptation, which is the most correct method that can be made for the Great Khan, which has become a part of many generations since the day it was built, to be able to reach future generations, is one of the most important principles. The value of cultural heritage in reuse adaptation is a reuse with the new functions determined by preserving the authentic character in the structure, bringing the past and the new architectural understanding together, although the structures are used at different times in history from south to south. In this context, it has been determined that during the construction researches, the Great Khan was used throughout its history and has other functions independent of the main function of the building. Parallel to all of these, in the methods used in the study, archive documents and literature search were conducted in order to learn the architectural characteristics and historical background of the original building, and interviews with the people of the old region were made. In order to determine the current use of the khan, the structure was interviewed with on-site analysis and observation, photography and tradesmen, and created the main methodology of the article. Together with these determinations made in today's usage, tables were created according to the new function and space classifications were made. In these tables, functional typologies are identified, transferred to architectural drawings, and photographed and analyzed in aesthetic and functional contexts
