Abstract
Obesity is increasing rapidly all over the world and it is a multi-factor chronic illness that reduces quality of life. Childhood obesity is extremely important risk factor for adult obesity. This study has been conducted on 26025 students going to 197 different primary and middle schools that are affiliated to Directorate of National Education in order to determine the prevalence of obesity in the students between 6-19 years of age living in the Karaman city and to compare it with the other studies. The weight, height, body mass index, ages and genders of the students were specified and the obtained data have been analysed in order to assess the rate of obesity. Our studies showed that the rate of overweight students was 8,6% and the rate of obese students was 7,9%. When a comparison is made based on their genders, 8,3% of the male students was found to be overweighted and 9,3% was obese whereas 8,9% of the female students was overweighted and 6,1% were found to be obese. It has been found out that obesity is more common at puberty in both genders. As a result; it has been determined that obesity incidence of children in research group is medium level. It is necessary to emphasize the notions of adequate and balanced diet and physical activity in schools for not increasing obesity incidence which is modarate in our province.
