Abstract
Purpose: Eotaxin is a selective chemo-attractant for eosinophils from CC chemokine family. Eotaxin and similar chemokines are responsible from chemotaxis of eosinophils which are basic inflammatory cells in allergic iflammation to the target tissue. In the present study we investigated the serum levels of eotaxin, IL-13 in children with atopic and non atopic asthma and healthy controls in order to investigate its' contribution to the pathogenesis of astma. Methods: Thirty three patients with stable asthma were included to the study. The patients were divided into two groups as atopic (n: 17, age range 5-13 years, median 10 years) and non atopic (n:16, age range3-ll years, median 9 years). Ten healthy children aged between 3 and 11 years without a history of asthma and any other allergic diseases served as controls. Results: Atopic and non atopic asthmatic children have higher serum eotaxin and IL-13 levels compared to healthy children, but the difference was not significant. There was no correlation between serum eotaxin and IL-13 levels. Conclusion: As a conclusion, as this study was performed on stable asthma patients, further studies which are conducted on tissue and asthma attack are required in order to determine the roles of eotaxin and IL-13 in childhood asthma.
