Abstract
Purpose: Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is essential for the differentiation of lymphoid cells, particularly T cells, and plays a role in the maturation of mono-cytes to macrophages. ADA, an important enzyme in purine and DNA metabolism is considered to be an indicator of cell-mediated immunity. Tobacco causes DNA damage because of its toxic contents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of serum ADA activity in smokers and Maraş powder users (a variety of smokeless tobacco). Material and Methods: We compared the serum ADA levels in smokers (n=39), in users of smokeless tobacco (n=47) and in healthy control subjects (n=33). Results: The ADA activities were 23.03±6.26 U/L in smokers, 25.18±12.25 U/L in smokeless tobacco group, and 17.20±4.50 U/L in control subjects. The results of smoker and smokeless tobacco group were statistically significant higher than control group (p=0.017, p=0.001 respectively). There was no statistically significant differences between the smokers and smokeless tobacco group (p>0.05). The serum ADA activities did not correlate with the duration of substance use. Conclusion: Both tobacco and smokeless tobacco increase the serum ADA activity.
