Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the preva-lence of hepatitis E virus infection and its socioeconomic distribution in our hospital's region. 388 children aged between 2-14 years who attended to our pediatric polyclinics between September 1997 and February 1998 with different complaints were included in this study. 15 of 388 children (3.86%) were found to be Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) Ig G anti-body positive. Patients were grouped according to age, sex, socioeconomic and educational status of families and the type of daily drinking water supply. Results of this study showed a positive relation between hepatitis E virus infection and low socioeconomic and educa-tional status. Anti-HEV Ig G positivity was found to be increased with age. In our cases, there was a significant correlation between the group who uses tap water for drinking and the anti-HEV Ig G positivity. Hepatitis E virus can cause extensive epidemics by contaminating food and water supply through fecal route. Protection of water and food supply from fecal contamination, environmental and personal hygienic training and supplementation of the conditions to advance cultural and socioeconomic status of people would be the basis of the aims to decrease the outbreaks of hepatitis E virus.
