Abstract

Oil-bearing rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) is the most important species, producing a highvalue aromatic oil, which is used in the fragrance and cosmetic industries. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of storage period (1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks at 4oC) and the drying (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 months under room conditions) on rose oil content and composition. Essential oils produced by Clevenger hydro-distillation were analyzed by GC/MS. Essential oil content of the rose flowers during the storage period decreased from 0.035% to 0.010%. In the same period, while the percentages of monoterpenic alcohols such as citronellol, geraniol and nerol reduced, the percentages of hydrocarbones such as nonadecane, heneicocane and eicosane increased. The amount of dry flowers was 15% of the fresh flowers drying under the room condititons. After drying, the essential oil content of dry flowers was 0.060 %. But after the 6 months later, their essential oil contents continuously decreased to 0.035%. The rose oil disitilled from dry roses had higher percentages of the long-chain hydrocarbones such as nonadecane, nonedecen and heneicocane, and had lower percentages of the monoterpenic alcohols such as citronellol, geraniol and nerol than the oil distilled from fresh flowers.
