Abstract

The application of rape oil derived fuels in Diesel engines of city buses is reported in this paper. The results of testing a RABA MAN Diesel engine of catalogue rated power 141 kW at speed 2100, stroke volume 10.349 dm3, and direct injection into a HM - type chamber on a test bed are quoted. The used fuel was a methyl ester of rape seed oil (RME). The testing comprised the engine performance and exhaust emissions measurement in compliance with EEC 49. The results have been compared with those obtained for Diesel fuel (DF). Also road testing of buses fed with RME fuel was conducted. As shown by the engine performance characteristics the energy efficiency of the engine was slightly higher when fed with the rape seed oil derived fuel. As to the emissions, there was a reduction of $NO_x$ (about 15 %), HC (about 12 %), and soot (about 40 %). The road testing proved that Diesels fed with the RME vegetable fuel manifest good operational performance. Since this is accompanied by a reduction of the toxic substances in exhaust, one may conclude that preference should be given to the RME fuel in urban transport applications.
