Abstract

In the studies of the First World War, which we have left behind its centenary, the subjects of the war that have been overshadowed until now have gained importance. The women’s movement is one of them. With the centenary of the war, the issue of “women and war” has been studied more. The diversification of historiography methods, especially in the second half of the 20th Century, was also effective in this. The social dimension of the war came to the fore after this period. Researchers also focused on civilians behind the front. The women’s movement became one of these areas. In this article, the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires that joined the First World War as allies are approached from a different perspective. The war experiences of the women of the two allied empires are discussed within the context of the history of the women's movement, which is increasingly important today. The article focuses on the Austrian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is important to determine the progress before the war in order to make a comparison on the developments in the wartime struggle for rights. For this, the pre-war period is first studied. Comparing the experiences of the wartime allies allows a different view of the Ottoman women's movement. In this way, it can be revealed whether the contemporaries of the Ottoman women's movement followed a parallel course with the developments in European states. The Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires were both on the losing side of the war and also disintegrated at the end of the war due to their multinational structures. Austria and Turkey emerged as the two states governed by the Republic at the beginning of the century. The results of these great changes in the history of both states can also be seen in the social sphere. In both states, women's rights were not off the agenda. This article is not about the wartime alliance of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungary Empires. It is a comparison of the women’s movement in two multinational empires that fell apart after the war, sharing the same fate. Thus, it was intended to contribute to a shadowy area of the war. At the same time, how the Ottoman women’s movement was evaluated by Austria was examined.
