Abstract

Symptoms of the 2019-2020 new coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) that affect the whole world typically include dry cough, fever and shortness of breath. Besides these symptoms, high rates of sudden onset olfactory disorders in the data from the regions where the disease is observed suggest that this disease is related to the pandemic. The situation that arises as the data are collected; the first sign of COVID-19 disease in about 5% is sudden onset anosmia. Although there are studies in the literature that try to explain the mechanisms of smell disorder after viral infection with many viral infection agents, there is no specific study on COVID-19. However, ACE2 receptor and TMPRSS2 proteins, which are key in the entry of this virus into the cell, may also play a role in the development of anosmia. With this short review, we aim to explain the mechanism of the occurrence of COVID-19 infection-related anosmia with current data.
