Abstract
In the cochlear duct, spiral limbus contains many fibroblasts that give numerous cytoplasmic projections into the connective tissue of the limbus. In this study, using chemical maceration techniques, we dissolved the connective tissue of the limbus, exposed the surfaces of the fibroblasts and examined their shape and arrangement in the limbus by scanning electron microscopy. The fibroblasts possessed several dendritic projections that branched and anastomosed with those of neighbouring fibroblasts, thus forming a three-dimensional cellular reticulum in the auditory teeth and spiral lumbus. Transmission electron microscopy revealed presence of many gap junctions between the dendritic processes. Dendritic fibroblasts in the spiral limbus, may act as a skeleton for the auditory teeth and the entire spiral limbus and take part in the local chemical and physiological functions of the cochlea.
