Abstract
Objectives: We compared histopathologic features of the adenoid tissues obtained from patients with adenoid hypertrophy with or without otitis media with effusion. Patients and Methods: The study included 25 patients with adenoid hypertrophy and otitis media with effusion and 25 patients with adenoid hypertrophy alone. Surgical specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and examined under light microscope. Results: Lymphoid follicular hyperplasia, expansion of germinal centers, increased vascularization, increase in the intercellular leukocytes, and epithelial erosion were found in both groups, without any statistically significant differences (p>0.05). Conclusion: It appears that adenoid hypertrophy does not present with histopathologic features that will explain the predisposition to otitis media with effusion.
