Abstract

The self is discussed in philosophy, psychology, neurobiology and other disciplines in the framework of different problems. This article focuses on the self at a point where the neurobiological problem of the self has a direct relation with philosophical problem of the self. The self is discussed under the problem of personal identity and the question whether it is necessary to accept existence of a self that goes beyond the body. There are four criteria such as the identity of the body, memory, relative stability and continuity of personality, the relative coherence of the spatio-temporal continuity of the physical body through change for the personal identity problem discussed in philosophy. However, in terms of the human consciousness, it is necessary to find a self beyond Hume’s view, which has been very influential and probably the most common view in philosophy about the self, is that each of us consists in a physical body, and each of us has a sequence of experiences within that body. This thought creates some problems that go beyond the standard neurobiological problems of consciousness but will enable us to repose the question of consciousness in important ways. For this reason, it is necessary to examine the neurobiological consciousness problem in order to reach the self. Additionally, there are lessons to be learned about the neurobiological problem of the self from reflecting on the neurobiological problem of consciousness. Three features of the consciousness, qualitative, subjective and unity, make the self understandable. Conscious states always come to us as part of a unified conscious field and the self is a formal feature of the unified conscious field. In terms of the self as a formal feature of the unified conscious field, it is needed to know how the brain produces the peculiar organization of experiences that expresses the existence of the self. This refers to the point where the philosophical problem of self encounters with the neurobiology.
