Abstract

This article deals with the aesthetics of Plato chronologically. And it investigates how was interpreted the beautiful as a concept of value in his every age; and it looks at the relationship between art-ethics from a different aspect. The concept of beautiful in Plato gained firstly its ontological meaning in Greater Hippias, and this ontological meaning went on up to end of his age of maturity. But the main character of ideas, "to be by itself", was held in last age. Plato approached to art negatively; but the ground of this was not that he had no aesthetic understanding or pleasure. Contrary to that, he had a genuine aesthetic pleasure and understanding; he was aware of that while an artistic work could be valuable in terms of aesthetics, it could be of no value in viewing of ethics; or while an artistic work could be valuable in terms of ethics, it could be of no value in viewing of aesthetics. In spite of that he put aesthetics under the control of ethics in the favor of high interest of his society in future.
