Abstract

This article aims to examine the influence of Turkish ethos on the substance and contents of the Muqaddimah which was written by Ibn Khaldun. The work contains a conceptual map that serves as a source for Islamization experience. He, Ibn Khaldun, discovers Turks while he was evaluating the centuries of Muslimization/Islamization within their own realities, circumstances and possibilities, and believes that Turks possess capacity and potential that would be able to alter the orbit of historical experience Islam. In other words, the Turks are essentially main groups who direct and influence the book where fundamental thoughts and themes of the book are also in conformity with the ethos of this ethnic group/nation. This paper closely analyses the main characters of Turks described in the Muqaddimah, their life styles, their unique stance towards the world and their historical sources and roots. Considering the Seljukid experience, Ibn Khaldun not only exhibits in this book the background and framework which directed Turkish thought but also makes some suggestions about the future of Islamic civilization, and gives hope and guides for that future. So his masterpiece, the Muqaddimah, should be considered as a classic work for the history of Turkish thought.
