Abstract

From tradition to modern and contemporary the relation between art and evil or evil in art went through the changes. Evil and ugly have always existed in the history of art. Evil and ugly determined both theme and form from literature to music, from painting to sculpture and other forms of art. In modern era especially 20th 21st centuries evil and ugly are not only a theme but also founder actors. In this article, considering the change of art from good and beautiful to evil and ugly, we claim that evil is a constituent actor of modern-contemporary art. We can say that the claim which is in the basis this change, manifestes itself in both the theory of art and the judgements and productions of the qualities of art works. The claim especially is explained with the question "What is art?" and via those two transformations. First transformation is the historical changing which includes changing from traditional to modern and contemporary eras. Second one is the cognitive changing which embodies the changes is identity understanding, supremacy term and nature of art works. Using these two transformation points and some examples, we will ground our claim that "evil is the founding agent of modern art".
