Abstract

Discussions concerning the impact of fine arts on social and political realms date back to at least ancient Greece. Plato believed that poetry deceives people by creating illusions which in turn curbs the faculties needed for healthy reasoning. Sociologists like Saint-Simon and Adorno, on the other hand, underlined the potential of fine arts for reforming society and resolving social and political problems. In a similar vein, world-renowned Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet (19021963) was a believer of avant-garde art and used his own art accordingly, to convey his political/ideological messages to the Turkish public. Glorifying technology and science was a part of this attempt. Heavily influenced by Russian futurist poets of his time, Nazım Hikmet praised scientific developments and celebrated fast trains, tall apartment buildings, and tractors. This article will explore Hikmet's understanding of science and technology by relating it to the social and political context in which he wrote his poetry.
