Abstract

Seneca, who was one of the most eminent political figures of Neronian era, first as the mentor of the young Emperor, then as his advisor, was always proud to be a Stoic. One of the basic principles of Stoic philosophy was the necessity of taking part in politics. Seneca, who in Nero’s court was against the idea that wise man should withdraw from politics, thinks on the contrary towards the end of his life, after his retirement from politics. More gently in his work On Leisure, more strictly in his Letters to Lucilius, Seneca thinks that to be far from politics is the best thing for a man. Composed after all those tumultuous years in politics, this collection of letters is also a collection of genuine confessions that Seneca shared the experiences he got throughout his life. So in this article I tried to study Seneca’s thoughts on politics through his letters to Lucilius, and that these thoughts had differed according to different eras of his life
