Abstract
Objectives: We evaluated the changes in humoral and cellular immune responses in chil-dren with chronic or recurrent tonsillitis. Patients and Methods: Twenty-one children (13 girls, 8 boys; age range 2 to 14 years) with chronic or recurrent tonsillitis were studied. To evaluate the cellular immunity,$CD_3$ , $CD_4$, $CD_8$ , $CD_19$, $CD_23$, $CD_16$ and $CD_56$ were measured. Total IgG, IgG subgroups ( $G_1$, $G_2$, $G_3$, $G_4$), IgA, IgM and IgE levels were measured to evaluate the humoral system. Complement activity (CHıoo) was also measured. Throat swabs and antibiograms were obtained and antistreptolysin O and complete blood count were routinely measured in the absence of signs of an acute infection. Results: Blood IgE (p<0.05) and IgGı (p<0.001) levels were elevated and the classic pathway of the complement system was found to be significantly active (p<0.005). $CD_3$(p<0.001), $CD_4$ (p<0.001) and $CD_23$ (p<0.001) levels were significantly high. Conclusion: it seems that humoral and cellular immune responses do not weaken or decrease in chronic or recurrent tonsillitis.
