Abstract
Objective: People have the right to make a decision about the time of bearing a child in our world. Contraceptive methods are developing as the other technologies. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of modern contraceptive methods in Kahramanmaraş city as a model for Turkey. Materials and Methods: We investigated the 410.687 reports of primary care units in Kahramanmaraş that provided family planning services for the period 1990-2001. From these reports the kind of contraceptive methods and the number of people who are using these methods were designated and separated into groups according to years. Results: Although families do not want to have a large number of children and modern methods for family planning are easily available in our country, families still use traditional methods. But in Kahramanmaraş modern methods have displayed a significant increase in the last decade. Not only women but also their spouses take part in the family planning according to our findings. Vasectomies seem to have increased but the increase is not as much as the increase of the population. Induced abortion still tends to be a frequent family planning method. New methods such as injeçtable contraceptives find a wide usage in this city. Conclusions: As the years pass, Kahramanmaraş shows development and the usage of effective contraceptive methods has increased. We conclude that not only women but also their spouses must be educated about modern family planning for the protection of national health.
