Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the relationship between lipid fractions and chronic otitis media with cho-lesteatoma. Study Design and Methods: We examined serum lipid fractions of 30 patients who presented with chronic otitis media accompanied by Cholesteatoma and underwent surgery. The results were compared with those of 30 control subjects who were found to be normal on their ear, nose and throat examination. Results: Significant differences were found between the study and control groups with respect to cho-lesterol, HDL, VLDL and triglyceride levels (p=0.000, p=0.003, p=0.007, and p=0.012, respectively), whereas LDL levels were not significantly different. Conclusion: This study showed a positive re-lationship between lipid fractions and chronic otitis media with Cholesteatoma. Although we cannot make any precise recommendations as to the op-timal treatment and preventive measures, it is de-sirable to monitor serum lipid levels and rec-commend an appropriate diet in order to reduce postoperative recurrences.
