Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between teachers' perceptions of principal support and academic optimism levels in schools. The correlational research method was used. The population of the study consisted of teachers working in primary schools in the central district of Defne in the province of Hatay in the 2020-2021 academic year. Included in the sample were 333 primary school teachers selected from the research population through simple random sampling. The data collection tool consisted of a personal information form, principal support scale, and school academic optimism scale. The results of the study showed that school principals generally support teachers according to the teachers' perceptions. However, the instrumental support from the school principal is greater than emotional support and instructional support. The overall academic optimism levels in the schools are high. However, the academic emphasis at school is higher than self-efficacy and trust. Positive and significant relationships were found between the sub-dimensions of the principal support scale and the sub-dimensions of the school academic optimism scale. It was revealed that teachers' perceptions of principal support are a significant predictor of academic optimism levels in schools. Considering that school principals provide the least instructional support and the academic optimism in schools is at the lowest level of trust, in-service training programs to be organized for school administrators can primarily include the topics of instructional leadership and organizational trust.
