Abstract
The aim of this study is to compare the refractive errors measured with photorefraction and autorefraction in adult population and children. Materials and Methods: We compared refractive status of 100 eyes of 50 patients (25 children, 25 adult) who did not have ocular problems apart from refractive error. The patients were separated in two groups according to their ages; children (Group 1) and adults (Group 2). We have compared the results of spherical equivalent refraction, cylindrical refraction and cylindrical axis that were acquired by non cycloplegic photorefraction, cycloplegic and non cycloplegic refraction using autorefraction. Results: Mean age was 11,08±3.04 in Group-1 and 30,018±5,92 in Group 2. In Group 1, the differences in spherical equivalent between photorefraction and cycloplegic autorefraction were not statistically significant (p>0,05, p:0,316). However, the difference in spherical equivalent was statistically significant between photorefraction-cycloplegic autorefraction and cycloplegicnon cycloplegic autorefraction (p<0.05, p:0.014 ve p:0.01 respectively). In Group 2, there was no significant difference in spherical equivalent between photorefraction and non cycloplegic autorefraction (p>0.05, p:0.13); however there was significant difference in cycloplegicnon cycloplegic autorefraction and photorefractioncycloplegic autorefraction measurements (p<0.05, p:0.01 ve p:0.01 respectively). In both groups, no statistically significant difference was found in cylindrical refraction and axis between three measurements (p>0.05). Conclusion: When photorefraction is compared with autorefraction, photorefraction can be safely used to detect the refractive errors in children and adults.
