Abstract

Objective: Circumcision is one of the most common operations performed in the world. In contrast, to Western societies, where circumcision is performed in the neonatal period, it is performed at older ages in our population, and the performer may affect the complication of circumcision. The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency of the circumcision and complications due to this operation and to investigate the performer, the place and the mean age on young male in Turkey. Materials and methods: A convenience sample of 2061 young men aged from 19 to 27 years was enrolled and cross sectionally evaluated for status of circumcision. During the general health examination of the participants, an urology specialists performed their urogenital examinations and noted down the results. Results: The mean age of the privates was found 20.3±1.0. We found that 99.13% of the participants have been circumcised. The average age for circumcision was found 6.41±3.26 years. Only 11.5% of the circumcisions were performed by a surgeon and 40.38% of them were executed at home. 130 participants (6.36%) had complications and only 10 (7.7%) of them perceived this complication. Meatal stenosis was the most common complication (4.4%) of circumcision. Conclusion: The circumcision is a traditional application in a Muslim country like Turkey and performed mainly by traditional practitioners. Therefore, the frequency of acute and chronic complications may increase due to nonphyscian operators. It is impossible to give up circumcision in a Muslim population, but unhealthy conditions must be prevented.
