Abstract

Introduction: Despite the developments on the field of male sexual dysfunction, our knowledge in the physiopathology, psychology and treatment of female sexual dysfunction is still less than sufficient because of the lack of an ideal classification system and limited number of studies. However, the recent public and medical interest in this subject has resulted in increasing number of studies on female sexual dysfunction. Sufficient data on the incidence and risk factors for female sexual dysfunction in Turkey is still not available. In this study, various demographic factors that might influence sexual dysfunction in healthy married females have been investigated. Materials and Methods: Ninety-eight volunteer married women were evaluated with the Index of Female Sexual Function (IFSF) questionnaire. The IFSF scores were compared with the age, marriage time, educational status, number of births, mensturation status and body mass index (BMI) using the Mann-Whitney U test and ANOVA tests The scores for each question on IFSF were compared with the chisquare test according to the mensturation status. The relation of age, marriage time, number of births, height, weight and BMI with IFSF scores was investigated with regression and correlation analysis. Results: The mean age of 98 women that made the study group was 33.2±9.3 years. The mean marriage time was 13.5±9.6 years. The number of births ranged from 0 to 7 (median= 3). Median BMI was 25 and ranged between 19 and 39. The mean IFSF score was 26.9±7.8. There was no statistical difference between the scores when the women were grouped according to age, marriage time, birth numbers, education and BMI. However, women with regular mensturation had significantly higher score than the rest of the females (p< 0.05). When the scores for each question were compared between women with regular mensturation and the others ther was no difference in neither of the sexual desire, arousal, satisfaction, pain nor orgasm components (p> 0.05). There was a weak negative correlation between marriage time and IFSF scores (r= -0.39; p< 0.05). Conclusions: In this study women with regular mensturation had significantly higher IFSF scores than the rest of the women. Additionally, a weak negative correlation was present between marriage time IFSF scores. Women with irregular mensturation, in menopause and with hysterectomy should be further investigated. The effect of marriage time should be evaluated by taking into consideration the additional negative factors like discordance between the couple, and menopause.
