The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of folk dances on the development of social skills and self-confidence of university students. In this research, which was carried out in the pre-test-post-test model with experiment-control group, 30 experiments, 30 controls and a total of 60 students from different departments of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University in the 2017-2018 academic years, participated in the study. At the beginning of the study, pre-test scores were obtained by applying social skill inventory and self-confidence scale to the students of test and control group. While no procedure was applied to the students in the control group, the students of the experimental group were taught local folk dances for 12 weeks and the demonstrations were exhibited in public places at the end of the training. At the end of the study, the same tests were applied to the experimental and control groups and the final tests were obtained. In the study, Social Skills Inventory developed by Riggio (1986) and adapted to Turkish by Yüksel (1997) and then made into short form by Koydemir (2006) and “Self-Confidence Scale” developed by Akın (2007) were used. Independent and dependent groups t-test statistics were used to analyze the data obtained in the study. According to the findings of the study, significant differences were found in favor of experimental group students in all sub-dimensions of social skill, total score of social skills, sub-dimensions of self-confidence and total score of self-confidence. According to this result, it can be said that folk dances improve the social skills characteristics and selfconfidence of university students.
