Abstract

Şerevdin plateau is located at the intersection of Karliova and Solhan districts of Bingöl in the upper Euphrates section of the eastern Anatolia region. In the scope of the research project titled “prehistoric and ancient surveys in Bingöl province and its districts” which we carry out with the support of Bingöl University, we have identifi ed that the rock paintings and the rock shelters are at an altitude of 2550 m in the Şerevdin plateau. Şerevdin plateau rock paintings are among the important representatives of the prehistoric rock paintings seen in diff erent regions of eastern Anatolia. It is very important that the site in which these paintings were identifi ed are very close to obsidian fi elds in Bingöl city. Rock paintings are one of the only methods by which people, who lived in prehistoric times, can express their experiences about daily life. Th ese were painted on the cave walls or on huge rock blocks. It will be meaningful to defi ne these paintings as the expression or refl ection of the feelings and thoughts of the prehistoric man. In addition, the paintings drawn on the walls of the caves and the rock blocks can be considered as a preparation stage for the pre-written or written periods.
