Abstract

In this research, the flow gauging stations (FGS) on the streams in Turkey, the cross-sections of these stations and the values of annual maximum flow (AMF) observed on these cross-section are investigated. As an outcome of the research, the flood flows and the flood gauge heights are determined on 47 FGS that are investigated. Log-Pearson Type III (LP3) distribution is utilized on the AMF values on FGS in which 10 or more flood flows were observed. A total of 1545 AMF values are perceived between the observation years, and the research led to the conclusion that 281 (18.2 %) of these values gave rise to floods. It is resolved that the station with the maximum probability of overflowing the minimum flood flow determined among the FGS investigated, was the FGS No 601 (85.7 %); and the station with the minimum probability of overflowing the flood flow, was FGS No 302 (19.3 %). The idea of forewarning the downstream settlements about a flood from upstream utilizing the information obtained by this study, in order to take precautions to mitigate possible damage due to the flood is developed.
