Abstract
In this study, leachate recirculation effects are investigated on waste degradation and landfill gas component. Test cells with (H2) and without (HI) leachate recirculations were constructed for this study at Odayeri Sanitary Landfill and they were operated for 950 days to investigate the effect of leachate recirculation on waste stabilization. CH4, CO2, O2 and H2S components of landfill gas in the test cells were monitored. The highest value of H2S component in landfill gas, which is an important operational parameter, was observed to be 50 ppm and it was consumed in 300 days and 400 days for H2 and HI, respectively. CH4 concentration in landfill reached to 50% due to refuse placement on day 200, and its concentration remains almost constant till end of the operation. CO2 component was around 70% for both of the cells at the beginning of operation, and it fluctuated between the values of 40-50%. The results obtained from the study showed that CH4 production at H2 test cell is more stabile than HI with increasing the moisture content of leachate recirculation.
