Abstract
Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of gaseous ozone and desensitizing paste on dentin hypersensitivity. Methods: A 16-week, 9-visit, splith mouth clinical study was conducted in Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, Yuzuncu Yil University, Van, Turkey. The study included 16 subjects suffering from hypersensitive teeth with gingival recession defects. A total of 103 hypersensitive teeth with air blast hypersensitivity were treated. One side was assigned for ozone gas application, while in the controlateral side desensitizing paste (5% Sodium Flouride varnish, Flor-Opal) was applied. The pain in response to air blast dentin hypersensitivity was measured with a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before the first application and prior to each follow-up visit. Data were analysed using Wicoxon and Friedman tests (P<0.05). Results: Clinically significant reduction of dentin hypersensitivity was reported in both groups after 16 weeks, (p<0.05). Application of gaseous ozone for hypersensitive teeth was found more effective than the application of desensitizing paste after 8 and16 weeks (P<0.05). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that both gaseous ozone and desensitizing paste procedures were effective in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity after 16 weeks. Application of gaseous ozone for hypersensitive teeth was better than desensitizing paste after 8 and 16 weeks.
