Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relations between periodontal disease, preterm birth (PB) and intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) in non-smoking postpartum woman. Methods: Out of 156 subjects, 64 subjects with normal birth (NB), 45 subjects with PB and 47 subjects with IUGR ranging in age from 18 to 34 years were included in this study. The features related with their pregnancy period, demographic characteristics and clinical periodontal parameters of this population were evaluated. Results: The mean value of the age in IUGR group was higher than in NB and PB groups (P<0.05). The number of subject who did not pay regular prenatal visits and who had previous delivery with low birth weight in NB group was lower than in the other groups (P<0.05). The ratio of subjects with healthy periodontal tissues and the ones who recieved antibiotics during pregnancy in NB group were higher than than in other groups (P<0.05). The mean values of probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) in PB and IUGR groups were higher than in NB group (P<0.05). Conclusions: Maternal periodontal disease may be a risk factor for an adverse pregnancy outcome.
