Abstract

Objective: Aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between out-of-home eating habits and anthropometric measurements among high school and university students and their adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Method: The study design was cross-sectional and during the study period, 776 students who met the inclusion criteria were reached. Declaration-based data were collected using a questionnaire containing the questions on general characteristics and dietary patterns of the students and the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED). The anthropometric measurements were performed and recorded properly. The statistical analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS 15.0 program. Findings: 125 male and 651 female students with a mean age of 19,1 ± 2,8 years participated in the study. As the scores ranging from 4 to7 that obtained on Mediterranean Diet Quality Index denote average diet quality, the mean score achieved by the students in this study was 4,1 ± 2,4. It was found that those who never consumed their main meals outside the home scored higher on the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (p 0.05). Conclusion: Out-of-home eating habits can cause many chronic diseases, especially obesity. The Mediterranean diet is an effective nutrition pattern in the prevention of these chronic diseases. As a result of the study, although there was no significant relationship between the anthropometric measurements and adherence to Mediterranean diet among the students, higher adherence among those who did not consume any main meal outside the home indicates that out-of-home eating may be a risk factor.
