Abstract
As the health literacy rate in society increases, the health system progressing through the ages will continue to improve. In the healthcare system that has made patient-centred care a target particularly during the last century, the ability of the public to access to health information, to understand and evaluate this information has increased the quality of health and created a visible difference in the improvement of health as well. The studies about health literacy, which has become a public health issue, have gained momentum all over the world, especially in European countries. Health literacy has been defined, classified in different ways and the scales have been developed. The aim of the studies is to raise awareness of health and to improve the quality of healthcare concordantly. The greatest share in this regard falls upon the health staff and nurses. Nursing profession, which is in direct contact with the patients, relying on its independent roles, undertakes the tasks of training and counselling in the provision of care and services for the patients, such as establishing health consciousness, appointment cards, the proper use of medicines. Health literacy, which is also linked to the literacy rate of the society increases when the individuals become aware of personal responsibility for health. The awareness of health literacy among nursing professionals, who play a key role in improving awareness of health literacy in society should be increased both individually and in terms of their education. Consequently, nurses' communication with the patients will be strengthened, patients’ health consciousness will be established entirely, quality of healthcare will be improved, health budget will be decreased and health system will continue to make progress
