Abstract
In this study, oil-bearing rose flowers were extracted with different organic solvents such as n-hexane which is traditionally used in rose concrete production, and the alternative solvents diethyl ether and ethyl acetate to produce concrete and absolute in higher yield and quality. After harvesting of oil-bearing rose flowers in the beginning, middle and end of the flowering season, concrete was extracted from the flowers using the solvents, and absolute was produced from the concrete with ethyl alcohol extraction. The compounds in the volatile oils of the rose products were analyzed by GC/MS. Considering the overall average of the harvest season, the highest commercial concrete and absolute productivity values were obtained at the extraction of the flowers harvested at the end of the flowering season. While the highest concrete yield (1.83%) was obtained from rose flowers harvested at the end of flowering season by ethyl acetate extraction, the highest absolute yield was found as 88.07% with the concrete extracted from the same season flowers by diethyl ether extraction. Comparing with the apolar solvents of n-hexane and diethyl ether, it was observed that ethyl acetate being the partial polar solvent dissolved more aromatic compounds from the flowers and resulted more flower savings in the concrete and absolute production. Although concrete and absolute products obtained by n-hexane contained more volatile oil compounds, concretes and absolutes obtained with ethyl acetate and diethyl ether solvents were rich in phenylethyl alcohol which is the main scent molecule.
