Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to reveal the attitudes of school administrators towards reporting child sexual abuse. The participants of the study consist of 340 school administrators working in pre-school, primary, secondary and high school education institutions. The data of the study were developed by Choo, Walsh, Chinna, and Tey (2013). (2013) by the Turkish Form of “Sexual Abuse Attitude Scale towards Child year. In addition to descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA were used for data analysis. School administrators rely on the authorities to take effective and necessary actions to report child abuse. Negative reactions from the family or the community to the child or to themselves cannot prevent reports of sexual abuse. School administrators who consider that a guideline on sexual abuse is necessary for all teachers also consider sexual abuse reports as their professional responsibilities. Male school principals have a more negative attitude than female school principals in reporting child sexual abuse. Among school administrators, those with low seniority have a more positive attitude to reporting child sexual abuse than those with higher seniority. While education level of school administrators is not a determinant variable in sexual abuse reports, it is the determining factor of school education level. School administrators in secondary schools have more negative attitudes towards reporting child sexual abuse when compared to school administrators in preschool, primary and secondary schools. From this point of view, it is suggested that a study should be conducted to reveal the reasons why school administrators working in secondary schools have negative attitudes towards reporting sexual abuse cases.
