Abstract
Objectives: Tonsillectomy is a frequent operation performed by ENT surgeons. Close localization of the tonsil tissue to the arteria carotis interna (ACI) poses some risk for operation-induced injury to ACI. This study investigated the relationship between ACI and the tonsillary fossa. Patients and Methods: Axial computed tomography scans of 22 healthy children and young adolescents were examined and the results were evaluated with respect to age and sex. Results: The distances between the right and left tonsillary tissues and ACI did not show any significant differences, nor did any correlations with age and sex. Conclusion: Considerable care should be given to the appropriate depth of incisions because of the close localization of the tonsillary fossa and ACI, and of possible anatomic variations.
