Abstract

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS IN MERALGIA PARESTHETICA In order to determine, the diagnostic value of electrophysiological tests in meralgia paresthetica, sensory nerve conduction studies and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) of the lateral femoral cutaneus nerve are studied bilaterally in 12 patients with unilateral meralgia paresthetica and in 10 normal subjects. In the patient group, the most common electrophysiological abnormality was the absence of sensory nerve action potential which was followed by low sensory potential amplitude and diminished sensory nerve conduction velocity. SEP latency abnormalities were less common. As a result, sensory nerve conduction studies is thought to be more supportive for the diagnosis of meralgia paresthetica than SEP studies, which can be used when sensory nerve action potential is not recordable due to technical reasons or anatomical variations.
