Abstract
This cross-sectional study was performed in order to deter mine the knowledge and practices of health personnel working in the primary health care institutions in Malatya, about Polio National Immunization Days (NlDs). Two hundred and forty-eight personnel who participated in in-service education programme about NlDs which was carried out by Health Directorate in April 1998 were questionnaired before the education. Questions about the aim and target group of NIDs were answered correctly by only 72 (29%) of the participants. One-quarter of the participants stated that NlDs had not been successful in 1997 and again almost one-quarter of the participants stated that 1998 NIDs wasn't really necessary. Of the participants who had had children at the age of target group, 92% had got their children vaccinated twice during NlDs in 1997. Of the participants who had children under five years in 1998, 94% stated that they would get their children vaccinated twice during NIDs. Those who did not get their children vaccinated during NIDs in 1997 explained their reason that, their children had already been fully immunized. These findings show that, polio eradication concept is not understood adequately by the health personnel and in-service education should be emphasized.
