Abstract
This descriptive study aimed to compare the environmental health services and the physical conditions at the primary schools located at Doğankent Health-Education-Research Area, with the criteria reported by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSI). . The quantity of lavatories for boys or girls and of urinals was lower than the standard set by the TSI at all schools enrolled in the study. Soap was not observed at the lavatories in six (42.9%) of the schools, with no garbage boxes and no deodorants in any of the toilette cabins for students. Garbage dumps or dunghills were observed in nearby of seven (50.0%) schools. Environmental health measures were found to be adequate at the yards of only five (35.7%) schools. Food canteens were found to be absent at seven (50.0%) of the schools and sold foods to be inappropriate for health at four (28.6%). First-aid boxes were found to be present in all of the schools for traumatic or disease conditions, but with insufficient supplies in five (35.7%). It can be concluded that environmental health services were insufficient according to TSI at schools examined in the study. This can be explained by the high population increase rates in the locality. Insufficiency of the cleaning supplies can be attributed to the underestimation of the subject by the school managements. The defects for the environmental health were reported to school managements and the students were informed for environmental health issues.
