Abstract
Medical waste pose contamination risks to patients, health personnel and the environment if waste management and disposal did not fulfilled properly. The aim of this study is to determine the level of awareness of health personnel, working in a tertiary hospital(n=1069), about medical waste management. This crosssectional study was made by face-to-face interview technique. Questionnaire consisted of 49 questions created to determine knowledge level of the participants about medical waste management. Medical Waste Knowledge Score(MWKS) was calculated according to given responses such as each correct answer is taken as one point(min 0- max 35 point). From a total of 486 participants, 71.7% were women, 41.6% were nurse, 29.9% were doctor and rest of participants are the other health personnel. Mean age of participants was 29.24±7.27 years, mean MWKS was found as 28.56±3.78. Significant difference was found between The MWKS and gender, occupation, age, in-service training. The MWKS was significantly higher among women, 28 and older age, taking in-service training groups and auxiliary health/cleaning personnel groups (p<0,001). 46.7% of all participants, 16.3% of doctors stated that they got in-service training about medical waste management. 16.9% of participants stated that they had been in contact with penetrating object contaminated by patient's body fluids in the past year. The health personnel's training about medical waste and management is crucial not only for their health but also for the environmental exposure. Determining the level of knowledge, auditing practices and improving them must be provided.
