Abstract

This paper is aimed at evaluating the relationship of demographic variables of 462 practitioners of accountancy as a profession with their job burnout levels. The Maslach Burnout Inventory is used as a research measure. The average scores and standard deviations of sub dimensions of burnout including emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment and the correlations between them are computed. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test is used to assess how the burnout scores response to the variations of the demographic variables such as gender, age, marital status, education level, position within the organization, years of job experience and years of experience within the organization. The general patterns of findings that emerged from this research led us to postulate that male practitioners of accountancy tend to score higher than female ones when taking gender as a predictor variable of the Depersonalizatjon subscale; those who are more educated also have more depersonalized feelings than others; married practitioners of the job tend to have higher levels of burnout than their single counterparts and those who have higher positions within the organization tend to score higher than others on the Depersonalization and Emotional Exhaustion subscales. Other demographic variables such as age, years of job experience and years of experience with the current department also have led to variations on the Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization subscales.
